We had a terrific Pet Wellness Fair on Oct. 27 with many new visitors touring the clinic and getting the answers to their questions from our team of experts.

Our vendor sponsors provided nutrition and supplement information, the latest in flea & tick prevention, arthritis treatments & pain prevention and much more.

The underwater treadmill and pool stayed busy with an enthusiastic retriever happily giving demonstrations of this special facility. Our certified rehab team and a board certified surgeon talked with visitors about orthopedic or neurologic issues.

We are happy to report that the fair raised $175 in donations for EACH of the three rescues highlighted: Dane County Humane Society, Friends of Ferals, and Grey Muzzle.

As the before photo shows, the root canal of Cricket’s lower canine tooth had been exposed due to the fracture. This is a strategic tooth which is very difficult to remove and important to save. Cricket felt much better after his root canal procedure.

His anesthesia record, VETDAR, shows that Cricket’s vitals remained stable during the procedure. (Click image to see full sized.) VETDAR (VETerinary Digital Anesthesia Record) prompts the Certified Veterinary Technician (veterinary nurse!) every 5 minutes to record the patient’s vital signs: heart and respiratory rates, pulse oximetry, blood pressure, and end-tidal (exhaled) carbon dioxide level. It also prompts a temperature reading every half hour. Our veterinary staff uses this graph during the procedure to detect any trends that need attention.

Cricket’s after photo shows a clean, healthy tooth. Cricket is available for adoption through Dane County Humane Society – we are proud to be supporters of DCHS and hope Cricket gets adopted soon!

You know, I’m trying to lose a lot of weight because I’m, um, a pretty big girl. But I’m up for the challenge. And the thing I’m really excited about is the extra playtime I’m getting from my friends at Westside Family Pet Clinic, as well as free recess. Kids in school love recess. Well, we kitties are no different. I know I’m going to drop these pounds really well with all this activity. I also have a super duper food ball I told you about where I can play and eat at the same time. Who says you shouldn’t play with your food! Anyway, life is good here at the clinic. Currently I am at 17 and my goal weight is 10 pounds. This makes me 70% overweight! Yikes! All my friends and personal trainers here at Westside are trying their hardest to help me live a longer healthier life!!

I have started walking on a treadmill twice daily, and actually don’t mind it as much anymore. With the help of the motivational staff I am encouraged to keep on going! I am not a fan of the underwater treadmill however; it’s very wet.

Dr. Ken has switched my food to Purina OM which is higher protein and great for helping me lose weight. Especially now that the buffet line is closed.

I have a new Slim Cat treat ball that forces me to work for my food by batting the ball around to force the food to come out. I’m still pretty good at getting the food out quickly.

My name is Fergie and my mom is Nicki. I am a little shy so it took me awhile to talk about myself……….. I am about 6 years old and my favorite past times include sleeping, eating, wrestling with my brother, sleeping and eating.

I love my Husky box! (it only makes sense that it’s one of my favorite places to nap since I am husky myself.)

Needless to say I am “fluffy”. (When I was a baby I was tiny and a good weight, I was so small that I could sleep in a dog frisbee.) My mom tells me all the time that I am overweight and need to lose but I am a stubborn little thing. I am so chubby that Mom has put me on a diet. It’s a mix between Royal Canin Calorie Control and their Satiety formulas. My diet was going swimmingly and I was done to almost 9.5 pounds! Then one day Mom got Dad a dog! (The traitors!) I was not fond of this at all until I realized he does not like to finish his breakfast… Mom weighed me a few days ago because she said I looked portly. I am now 11.2 lbs. Mom did not like this at all. (When you compare with my brother you can tell I am overweight, he is at his ideal weight.)


She has entered me in the Reducing Rescue Contest at her work. Today she told me I may be going to work with her to work out on the treadmill. I do not know how I feel about this but I’ll give a try. I am hoping I can lose some weight soon so Mom stops pestering me. I’ll let you all know how this weight loss thing goes. Now onto one of my favorite past times, napping!

Well from my perspective, spring has sprung for sure! A sure sign of it is Dr. Ken running all around getting ready for the annual WFPC Nutrition Fair and Pets Reducing for Rescues Contest.

I don’t get as much attention when he is living with the laptop on his lap but I will say I did enjoy watching (and helping!) him build Bug Mountain!

Lance and I were the test cats for this wondrous creation. He portioned out our food and we got to climb to the top. What a nice view!

Well, it was all final for the Nutrition Fair and “Pets Reducing for Rescues” Contest Kickoff on Saturday so he had me try it out!

What a difference a week makes! This morning I was out running around on the grass and just 10 days ago my paws were on snow!

I was up at my first Birkiebiener (or however they say that!) with Dr Ken and got to stay in a fun cabin with a huge dead fish on the wall.

The day after the race we got to go to his friend Terry who Dr Ken calls the “wax magician” Here I am in the sacred room of all cross country skiers …the “wax room”. I don’t exactly what happens in this room but it sure was fun to climb around.

Well, officially the Birkie is Dr. Ken’s last race of the xc ski season so its Madison until camping season begins I can’t wait!!!!!

Oh, I almost forgot — I did get to go kitty ice skating once on Lake Mendota before the ice started to melt today.
