The American Heartworm Society, the CDC, and the CAPC are unanimous in their recommendation to protect pets year round from all internal parasites at the same time as preventing heartworms.
Their recommendations are based on:
Year-round transfer of parasites can occur even though the pet does not go outside. Ticks are seen when there is still snow on the ground, indoor mosquitoes & insects are present, and parasites brought indoors by foot traffic are all instances where year-round transfer of parasites can occur.
It is difficult, if not impossible, with changing weather patterns and temperatures to determine when the parasite and disease are present in your pet’s environment so monthly year round prevention is recommended. Studies have shown that effective parasite protection is much higher when the monthly routine is followed year-round.
Our recommendation for Dogs:
