Heartworm prevention
Combined Tick, Flea & Heartworm Prevention
The American Heartworm Society, the CDC, and the CAPC are unanimous in their recommendation to protect pets year round from all internal parasites at the same time as preventing heartworms.
Their recommendations are based on:
It is difficult, if not impossible, with ever changing weather and temperatures to precisely determine when parasites and the diseases they harbor are present in your pet’s environment, so year-round prevention is necessary.
Year-round transfer of parasites can occur even though your pet may not go outside. Ticks are seen when there is still snow on the ground, mosquitoes and insects can reside indoors, and ticks and parasites can be brought indoors by foot traffic.
Studies have shown that protection against parasites and the disease they carry are higher when the monthly routine is followed year-round.

Our recommendation for Dogs:
Use Heartgard® monthly, year-round to prevent heartworms as well as hookworms, and roundworms. Heartgard supplies one of the best guarantees, product palatability, and spectrum of activity. It also has a twelve year history of safe administration and effectiveness.
AND…
Frontline® (used monthly, year-round) has the best protection against the ticks that carry disease and is highly waterproof. An excellent safety record, a satisfaction back guarantee, and an easy, mess-free application process have kept this product our favorite for the past 8 years. It is a much safer and more effective product than other flea and tick protection products that contain permethrin (which is deadlyto cats).

Our recommendation for Cats:
Using Revolution® monthly, year-round has a very broad spectrum of activity against fleas, ticks, heartworms, and internal parasites. It is also very safe in species that are known for their sensitivity to medications. Its effectiveness, ease of use, and company guarantee makes this our preferred choice for both outdoor AND indoor cats. (28% of cats that had heartworms infections in a recent study were indoor only cats)
The new heartworm test for cats is now available at our clinic. Every time we test your cat for Feline Leukemia & FIV virus we will also check them for this dangerous parasite.
