Food Recall 8-2010

P&G voluntary limited recall of specialized dry pet foods due to possible health risk

Potential Salmonella Contamination
At Procter & Gamble Pet Care, the welfare of consumers and pets is our first priority.  Therefore, we are voluntarily recalling several specialized pet food products–to help prevent any potential health problems. Procter & Gamble Pet Care is voluntarily recalling Iams Veterinary Formula dry pet foods and select Eukanuba dry pet food as a precautionary measure because it has the potential to be contaminated with salmonella.  No salmonella-related illnesses have been confirmed. The affected products represent a very small portion of P&G’s pet food products.

What products are included in the recall?

Click here to link to the fda.gov website for the formulas involved in this voluntary recall.

The affected products are sold in veterinary clinics and specialty pet retailers throughout the United States and Canada.  No canned food, biscuits/treats, or supplements are affected by this announcement.

These products are made in a single, specialized facility.  In cooperation with FDA, P&G determined that some products made at this facility have the potential for salmonella contamination.  As a precautionary measure, P&G is recalling all products made at this facility.

What are the symptoms of a salmonella infection?
Pets with a salmonella infection may experience decreased appetite, fever, abdominal pain and appear sluggish. More aggressive symptoms may include vomiting, bloody diarrhea and dehydration.

People handling dry pet food can become infected with salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with surfaces exposed to this product.

What should I do with the product; how do I get reimbursed?
The dry pet food products in the chart below should be disposed of in a responsible manner*.  You will be reimbursed by calling 1-877-894-4458 and speaking directly with P&G Consumer Relations.  Please do not call your veterinary clinic regarding reimbursement claims.  However, please consult with your veterinarian on specific dietary alternatives and recommendations to ensure the continued health of your animal.

Product Availability
Procter & Gamble is currently developing a plan to re-supply our customers from other facilities and we plan for these products to be back on shelf as soon as possible.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this situation causes you and want to assure you that P&G is taking all the necessary steps to ensure our product quality meets all our customer and consumer expectations.
